Awakening to Our Inner Truth
“When we grasp truth…all of our ways of knowing align. We recognize this alignment as our ideal state of being.”
What is your life anchored in?
I return to this question when I find myself trying to derive a sense of centeredness from an external source. It reminds me that work and even my closest relationships won’t make me whole. Inner peace is an inside job.
The acknowledgement leads to more questions…What feeling am I actually seeking? Where does it stem from? Does it last?
In her bestselling book, The Way of Integrity, Martha Beck illuminates our inner teacher as the source...
“When we grasp truth — any truth, from the correct solution to a math problem to the capacity for love — all of our ways of knowing align. We recognize this alignment as our ideal state of being. It feels calm, clear, still. That feeling is the inner teacher saying yes.
The way of integrity is simply to listen to this voice, to sustain this feeling not just occasionally, but often — even continuously.”
What does it feel like?
“It feels like freedom,” she adds in our conversation. “As the Buddha said: When you find the ocean, whatever it looks like, you can tell it's the ocean because the ocean always tastes of salt. When you find enlightenment, no matter what it looks like, you can recognize it because enlightenment always tastes of freedom. There's physical, emotional, spiritual, and logical alignment.”
In this episode snippet, she illuminates how we can awaken to our own inner freedom and live in integrity to sustain it.
Let’s begin by reflecting on Martha’s question: “What makes you feel like the truth is coming home to you more than anything else?” How might you spend more time in that state?
With gratitude,
