Indulging in the Adventure of Life
“I’m 76 and I’m still dreaming. I don’t have deadlines and I don’t have limits.”
When Norma Kamali visits kids at her high school she encourages them to imagine...How close to your dream can your life be?
Renowned designer, Norma’s extraordinary life is an embodiment of not only realizing our dreams, but continuously expanding them. She’s been an iconic designer for over 50 years, leading her namesake label for 45, whilst simultaneously advocating for and embodying the values of a healthy lifestyle. Her philosophy is an invitation to indulge in the adventure of life.
“I’m 76 and I’m still dreaming. I don’t have deadlines and I don’t have limits.”
How does she embrace it?
By striking out as a solo designer in her 20s, with only a mattress and $98 to her name. She divorced her husband and left the company they started because she knew she “wouldn’t have a soul” if she stayed.
In saying ‘Yes!’ to a spontaneous trip to discover the world’s greatest olive oil, an experience that not only spurred her wellness endeavors, but was one of the best adventures of her life.
In her 50s, it was committing to a life cleanse, when despite living in the home she walked past and dreamed would be hers’ as a child, she realized that the beauty she collected was inhibiting, rather than inspiring, her creativity. She gave it all up and lives minimally today.
Norma’s ability to pursue her dreams is measured equally in courage as it is in her lifelong commitment to cultivate her own vitality. In our conversation, we delve into her book I AM INVINCIBLE to explore the physical, mental, and spiritual foundations that facilitate our becoming. For her, self-care isn’t just about eating well and exercising. It’s a form of self-respect that manifests “as if you’re sending beams of positive light that draw positive people and experiences to you.”
Norma’s “no deadlines and no limits” declaration stayed with me as a catalyst to do all that enlivens us.
What life experience would you pursue if you had no limitations? How might you take one step towards that this week?
With gratitude,
Jenna
