Living in Integrity
“Living your integrity will bring you everything you need to be happy...And, it will cost you everything else.”
What makes you feel like the truth is coming home to you more than anything else?
Martha Beck has asked thousands of people this question.
Harvard trained sociologist and world-renowned life coach, she’s found a sentence “that makes people feel this ring of truth. It is: I am meant to live in peace.” In her bestselling book, The Way of Integrity, she shows us how to get there.
Martha views integrity as living your truth, rather than by cultural norms and pressures. “Integrity means intact,” she says. “You don’t leave it because you’re bad. You leave it because you’re trying to be good.”
Her own integrity journey began when she vowed not to tell a single lie for a year, to herself or others. It brought her to monumental turning points that, though scary, led to lasting freedom.
“It looked on the outside like I lost my religion, my family of origin, all my friends before the age of 17, my marriage, my sexual orientation, my home, my career…And, during that time, I got happy for the first time I could remember.”
“Living your integrity — doing what is really true for you — will bring you everything you need to be happy...And, it will cost you everything else.”
In our conversation, Martha shares her experience living in complete truth, hearing her inner teacher, and seeing the light, which taught her that “the meaning of your life is not to achieve anything. It is to feel like this while you are alive.” We explore how we can live in alignment, break away from the hustle, and the magic that happens when we do.
What is one choice that would elevate your sense of integrity? How might you take a step towards that truth?
Wishing you peace,
Jenna
